An introduction to traditional and experimental methods of hand papermaking, with an emphasis on papermaking as an expressive art medium. Sheet forming, laminating, inclusions, pigmenting and some molding and casting techniques will be taught. Items that might be added to your paper are thread, glitter, herbs, pot pourri, feathers, leaves, lace, etc. One day workshops available.
Combine the visual information of a photograph with the painterliness of a brushstroke. Learn historic photographic processes of Cyanotype (blue print) and Van Dyke Brown printing, and use them to create contemporary prints. Light sensitive emulsions will be hand coated onto paper or fabric and contact printed with photograms, hand-made negatives (cliche verre), transparencies and photo negatives. These images may then be incorporated into quilts, books or collages. No previous photography experience necessary. Other processes to be covered include Polariod transfer and solvent transfer and Polaroid emulsion lift. Four session class or individual sessions featuring one of the processes are available.
Learn the basics of bookbinding in this 4 session class. Simple stitched bindings and accordion structures to start, culminating with the elegant and useful Coptic binding.
This class is for the student who would like to move beyond making blank books and actually begin to integrate structure, image and text in an artist's book. We will meet four times with 2 or 3 weeks between meetings. There will be open-ended assignments to complete for each class. There will be structured idea-generating exercises in each class.
